Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an notable 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
