Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins Following Recent Detentions

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points versus the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a crushing 146-114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after player Terry Rozier was detained over suspected illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a sweeping FBI probe into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.

However, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded 86 first-half points to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Terry had the support of the team.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."

Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our team.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their initial match after the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events

Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also said an league probe into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"So, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"Moreover two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and investigating."
