Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend following the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the club - are part of the names to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of games for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the club directors as they start the search of hiring a fresh manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham player is out of work which means the club would not need to pay any compensation.
