A Tragic Transformation Just One Year Has Brought in the US

Twelve months back, the landscape was completely separate. Prior to the American presidential vote, reflective citizens could acknowledge the country's serious imperfections – its injustices and disparity – however they still could see it as the US. A free society. A land where the rule of law meant something. A country led by a honorable and decent leader, notwithstanding his advanced age and growing weakness.

These days, this autumn, many of us hardly identify the country we reside in. Persons believed to be illegal immigrants are detained and shoved into transport, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed to build a lavish dance hall. Donald Trump is persecuting his opponents or alleged foes and requesting legal authorities transfer a huge total of citizen dollars. Uniformed troops are deployed across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, relabeled the War Department, has – in effect – freed itself of regular press examination during its expenditure of potentially totaling nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, law firms, media outlets are submitting from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are handled as aristocracy.

“The United States, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the brink into authoritarianism and fascism,” an American historian, commented recently. “Finally, faster than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”

Each day begins to new horrors. And it's challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost we have become, and the speed at which it unfolded.

Yet, it is known that the leader was properly voted in. Following his profoundly alarming previous administration and even after the cautions that came with the understanding of Project 2025 – even after the president personally said publicly he intended to rule as a tyrant solely at the start – enough Americans elected him over Kamala Harris.

While alarming as the current reality may be, it’s even scarier to recognize that we are just nine months into this administration. What will another 36 months of this downfall find us? And if the three years transforms into an prolonged era, because there is nobody to limit this ruler from determining that additional tenure is essential, maybe for defense purposes?

Granted, not everything is hopeless. There are legislative votes next year that may establish an alternate political equilibrium, if Democrats retake either chamber of parliament. There are government representatives who are trying to impose a degree of oversight, such as representatives that are launching an investigation into the attempted money grab from legal authorities.

And a presidential election in 2028 could begin us down the road to recovery just as last year’s election put us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist countless citizens demonstrating in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed in the past days at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of America is rising”, exactly as before post-McCarthyism in that decade or amid anti-war demonstrations or during the Watergate scandal.

During those times, the listing ship eventually was righted.

Reich says he recognizes the signs of that resurgence and notices it unfolding at present. As evidence, he points to the widespread marches, the extensive, cross-party resistance regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal refusal by journalists to agree to government requirements they solely cover authorized information.

“The dormant force consistently stays dormant till specific greed turns extremely harmful, some action so contemptuous of the common good, specific cruelty so disruptive, that the giant is compelled other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

In the meantime, the major inquiries remain: can America return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its position globally and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My negative thoughts suggests that the second option is accurate; that everything could be gone. My optimistic spirit, however, convinces me that we have to attempt, by any means we can.

Personally, as an observer of the press, that’s about encouraging reporters to commit, more completely, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For some people, it may be working on congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to protect ballot privileges.

Less than a year ago, we lived in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or after another term? The reality is, we don’t know. The only option is to attempt to persevere.
